Overview

I remember seeing countless shows or movies where some computer nerd is able to hack into a school computer network, and instantly change all the students grades. I always thought this concept was completely ridiculous. That no individual person could really hack. But in recent years the threat of hacking (re-figuring or re-programing of a system to operate in ways not conducive to the administrators, designers, or owners intent) has become a serious threat. A clear threat that us cybercitizens have, is that someone will hack into our own computer, and thus our own personal data. Or in extreme cases a hacker could steal a person’s identity, change important finical data, find security codes, and other potential harmful activities. A regular computer user should invest in good firewall, and update computer programs. Because no one wants a corrupted computer.

A lot of hackers teach themselves the art, and are able to hack by learning how to program, understand code and how to manipulate it, and how to write HTML. Open source systems are especially easy for hacking, whereas closed or partially closed systems like Mac OS X will provide difficulty. Unix is the primary hacker forum because the code can be manipulated and understood. Unix is how the web operates, and a true Hacker will have to understand it. Being a hacker means you are part of a subculture. In order to be respected by the community, you have to know what you are doing. Not just anyone can be hacker.
